Players, supporters and committee members came together in the Mill Road clubhouse to celebrate an outstandingly successful 2025/26 season both on and off the pitch.
On display were the three major trophies won by the First Team in record-breaking style: the Western League Premier Division title, the Les Phillip (Western League) Cup, and the Torridge Cup.
Chairman Paul Larter's opening speech emphasised the sense of togetherness that had been a key feature of the season, and gave special praise to a variety of people who had made a noteworthy impact.
These included:
- The First Team Management and Coaching staff of Ben Potter, Ricky Marinaro and Sam Smith, whose hard work, commitment, leadership and belief deserved enormous gratitude from everybody connected with the Club.
- The playing squad, who have proved to the most successful Barnstaple Town side for 80 years with their competitiveness, determination and pride
- The Under-18s staff of Ashton Brettell and Harvey Maloney and the players, who finished in a very respectable third place in their League, with much to look forward to for the future
- Emma and Pete Down, whose catering expertise means the players are so well cared for after games, with Emma also playing a full part in the season as physiotherapist
- Sam Smith and his family, whose efforts that have gone into managing the clubhouse and making it a success have made a noticeable difference
- Jane Huxtable, whose major fixtures, match day and kit roles and years of dedicated service to the club behind the scenes often don’t (but should) get noticed and appreciated
- Tammy Watton, whose personality, persistence and enthusiasm have made the half-time draw a success and helped improve the overall matchday experience
- Alison Rogers, whose quiet but important hostess role in overseeing the half-time hospitality for visiting and home officials is another important role on match days
- Andy Henry and Bruce Tolland, whose many hours of volunteering to prepare the stadium for match days shows their unwavering dedication to the club
- Andrew Large and Alan Phair, whose valuable ‘strategic’ work (in support of the Chairman) has helped to bring stability and to shape its future direction
- Martin Smallridge, whose decades of loyal support have been important in the less-good times and who adds important trade skills to the maintenance team
- Steve James and John Clarke, not just for their generous financial support but, with their wealth of experience, for listening, offering advice and sharing their thoughts as needed
- Steve Screech and Nathan Bennett, whose passion for promoting the Club gives a wide presence across social media platforms as well as great photos and goal-cam footage
- Steve Parsons, who quietly came forward with a much-appreciated offer to fund the purchase of much-needed new hand driers
- Two people no longer at the Club, but who made noteworthy contributions earlier in the season: Dave Loder, for his commitment and knowledge as Secretary; and Ross Drury, who by securing significant sponsorship made a big difference to the season’s success
- Finally, the Club’s supporters, whose loyalty, travelling support, noise, colourfulness and passion created a positive atmosphere which helped carry the team all season long - and whose reputation for support was mentioned at the Western League Annual Presentation.
The Chairman’s speech went on to say that Manager Ben Potter’s achievements had surpassed all expectations. His particular record included automatic promotion to the Southern League, winning the treble, and having the highest-ever win percentage of any manager over his two seasons, all starting from a low baseline. He would now join a select small group of the all-time great managers in the Club’s history.
In conclusion, the Chairman looked forward to the various challenges of the Southern League. The season had shown exactly what can be achieved when everyone pulls together collectively and positively in the same direction. He was completely confident that there was still more, a lot more, to come from Barnstaple Town Football Club.
