Barum fell to their fourth defeat in a row in front of a large Bank Holiday crowd in far south-west Cornwall, to complete a month of fixtures without a single Home match.

The telling difference between the two sides was the hosts' speed and directness which caused the Barum defence problems all afternoon.

Recently promoted Barnstaple had lost their opening League fixture narrowly at Tiverton and likewise in the FA Trophy at Stoneham and the FA Cup at St Blazey.

On this occasion Manager Ben Potter was able to name a nearly full-strength squad for the first time this season, with Josh Parry starting on the bench.

Falmouth - in their third season at this level having previously finished 9th and 14th - had lost their first two League fixtures by narrow margins at Weymouth and at Home against Willand Rovers.

Barum went behind in the 8th minute, an unforced error in midfield leading to a simple through ball for Oscar Massey to exploit his renowned pace through the exposed middle of the defence to score low from 15 yards.

The visitors recovered from the early set back, with Joe Hatch's shot defected on to the post by keeper Morgan Jones, who also blocked a close-range effort by Brodie Montague.

Falmouth looked dangerous on the counter-attack, Oscar Massey missing a gilt-edged chance created by his own direct running.

Seconds after the interval Gabby Rogers' through ball enabled Joe Hatch to take advantage of defensive hesitancy and lob the keeper for the well-timed equaliser.

Barum enjoyed a ten minute spell of ascendancy, with the two Rogers coming close with a shot and a header, but the promising work was undone at the other end when Massey's solo run somehow evaded several tackles to put his side back in the lead with another self-made opening on 56 minutes.

While Barum were creating half-chances through Scott Piper and Luke Mortimore, Falmouth remained on the offensive, with Massey on a mission for a hat-trick with a couple of hurried shots from good positions, followed by a goalmouth melee cleared from in front of goal and a sharp save by the under-pressure Ollie Saunders.

Any realistic hopes of a comeback were dealt a blow in the 85th minute when another quick break into the area resulted in Tommy Rogers tripping Luke Barner as he turned towards the corner flag, with the same player converting the resultant penalty.

Falmouth comfortably saw out the rest of the match to make it a depressing day for Barum on one of their longest journeys of the season.

Just as a year ago, Barnstaple have suffered defeats in each of their first two League fixtures, and just like last season will be looking to improve their fortunes in the forthcoming busy September period.

That sequence starts with the first Home match of the season, a re-arranged League fixture this Saturday, 5th (3pm), against Worcester Raiders.

Saturday's visitors- who won promotion to Step 4 this season after finishing 5th in the Hellenic League - have so far played one League match, a 3-1 Home win against Larkhall Athletic, and like their hosts have been knocked out of both the FA Cup and FA Trophy.
